Here are some songs that make me think of the show! Not necessarily for the way they sound, although they're pretty great, but primarily for lyric content. Are there any songs not on this playlist that make you think of Everybody?

Puppet - Tyler, the Creator

“I do not have self-control

I am startin' to wonder

Is this my free will or yours?”

“I’m your puppet, you control me

I’m your puppet, I don’t know me”

II. No Exit - Childish Gambino

The song is about being driven into a reclusive state involuntarily. Feeling as if no other person, even the ones you love the most, will ever fully understand and stick with you. Internalizing the depression, searching for feelings of happiness to overcome the loneliness.

Sheep Go To Heaven - Cake

“And the grave-digger puts on the forceps”

vicissitude of life and death

“Sheep go to heaven

Goats go to hell”

In the bible, there is the parable of the sheep and the goats: sheep were people who followed Jesus and performed charity, goats did not and were condemned.

Everybody engages us in thinking about how we’ve lived our lives and why. Also, how our choices have put us on a trajectory.

Lazarus - David Bowie

“Look up here, I’m in heaven”

When this song was written, Bowie was dying of cancer. Lazarus is perhaps a way of confronting the singer’s own mortality. The title is also a reference to the biblical story of a man who Jesus was able to raise from the dead.

Tranz - Gorrillaz

“When you get back on a Saturday night

And the room is caving in

//

Do you turn into your effigy?

Do you dance like this forever?”

The narrator in this song is referencing self destructive behavior and escapism. The simultaneous feelings of being momentarily alleviated from stress but feeling like time is moving slowly.

Wicked Campaign - Modest Mouse

“Singing oh, oh, oh, things are not so bad

//

It’s our wicked campaign”

This song seems to me to be saying: we’re plagued with circumstances and labels beyond our control. The world is cruel. Even still, it is a brave act to make meaning out of the randomness and keep moving.

New Orleans - Brockhampton

“...what you living for? Is you gon’ finish what you started? What you quitting for?

//

Impending death is the only sign of life”

These lines serve as a reminder that our time is limited. You never know how much time you have left to complete your goals.

Rat a Tat - Fall Out Boy

“We’re all fighting growing old

In the hopes

Of a few minutes more”

This section speaks to the tendency humans have to delay death, and the tragedy of wasting time fighting not acknowledging that fact that we all die.

Joyride - Kevin Abstract

“How do you cope with a rope?

Me and my boyfriend, we lookin’ for hope”

Confronting suicidal thoughts while trying to remain optimistic. Holding on to love and hope in the face of death.
