THE WOLVES
#46 // Belle Nicholas
#46 is the new girl to The Wolves. She’s different, and a bit awkward. She’s never trying to be malicious or rude, she just doesn’t know how things work in the American suburbs, so she often comes off as cruel or stupid when she doesn’t mean to be. The other girls on the team don’t know why she acts the way she does, and it makes her an outcast. That is, until they finally talk to her and find out different things about her, such as why she moved there and how she’s traveled around her whole life.

#46, more widely known as Paisley Jo or PJ Hunter, was born to Freya Hunter, a writer well-known within the travel writing community. Freya got pregnant with PJ when she was 26. Freya is a free-spirit, and she chose to do artificial insemination to have Paisley because she always wanted a child but couldn’t see herself getting married with her lifestyle. Because of this, Paisley has grown up without a father, traveling around the world with her mother, and taking homeschool classes online since she was four. She’s actually ahead in school and is going to graduate a year early.
Because of her mother’s job, she has been all around the world. She was born in San Diego, California, but has since moved to Austin, Texas; Nova Scotia, Canada; Kodiak, Alaska; Galway, Ireland; Krakow, Poland; Jakarta, Indonesia; La Paz, Bolivia; Cozumel, Mexico; Yerevan, Armenia; Irkutsk, Russia; Kampala, Uganda, and most recently, Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Fez, Morocco. Basically, she has lived on every continent but Australia and Antarctica. Her mother lives in different places and writes books on their experiences there, where to eat and visit when in those places. PJ takes her classes while there and goes with her mother to explore. She’s grateful that she’s traveled so many places because it has made her
open-minded and given her a unique perspective on people. She still wants to travel to Australia, Sweden, Japan and Spain if she gets the chance.
Despite how wonderful and cool it is to visit so many places, Paisley has felt like an outcast most of her life. Every time she moves, she has to find a brand new set of friends. It is difficult because of the language barrier she often faces. She has learned bits and pieces of many languages, but she’s not fluent in any of them. That’s why she found football - by playing football, she’s made friends and had a social life in every country because people in every country love the sport. She’s played every position but striker -- this is because she fills in wherever a team will take her just so she can play. She still communicates with a lot of the friends she made in different countries.

Most notably, she keeps in touch with a girl she met when she was fourteen in Armenia. Her name is Yeva, and she played center mid with Paisley. They were two peas in a pod, and spent almost every day together for the seven months Paisley spent there. They have matching necklaces that Paisley keeps in her bag with her at all times because she doesn’t want to lose it. Having to leave Yeva behind was one of the most difficult things she’s ever done because they’re best friends, and she seems to be the one person in her life to really understand her. Paisley constantly feels the need to prove she belongs, and Yeva never made her feel that way. They facetime once a week and talk about what’s going on, and Yeva gives great advice on how to fit in with the girls on The Wolves, even though the American way of life is a lot different than the Armenian way of life.

While in Morocco, Paisley’s mother got a call that she needed to come home and be with her grandmother. She has emphysema and needs to be taken care of. Now, they’ve moved back to the states and live in the mountains in a yurt. Freya likes to live a minimalist life, and the yurt
is a sustainable way to do so. They still have internet connections and phones there, which gives a sense of normalcy to her. Still, she has trouble socializing when she’s stuck in the mountains. The move back to America has been the most difficult for PJ, because she feels isolated and has nowhere to explore. She begged her mother for days to find a way for her to play “soccer”, and finally, they found the Wolves. She may have to take three different buses to get to the Airdome, but it’s worth it so that she doesn’t feel so lonely.

Although football is a big part of her life, she is interested in other things. She loves traveling with her mother, and a lot of it has to do with her interest in sociology. She thinks that she would like to study sociology in college. She also enjoys bird watching, because there are a lot of birds out in nature and it occupies her when her mother is paying attention to smaller details for her books. She’s also interested in boys, but isn’t very active in that department because her mother keeps a close eye on her. She likes 80s music because that’s what her mother always played her growing up, and she has a mild obsession with Queen. One day, she hopes to be fluent in Spanish, Japanese and Armenian.

At the end of the day, PJ loves football more than anything. She loves the camaraderie of the sport and the teamwork it takes to win, and that anyone, regardless of their background, can play. She wants to play striker to push herself more out of her comfort zone since she’s never played it before. And, overall, she wants to feel accepted, just like she always has. From day one of joining The Wolves, she wants to prove herself and have the other girls like her. She often feels defeated because they don’t understand and will make fun of her lifestyle behind her back. It frustrates her because it’s not a lifestyle she asked for, and because she has a lot to offer if they would put their differences aside. She looks up to #7 because she is so talented and popular, and she respects #25 because of how hard she works, and how honest she is. Her favorite girl on the team is #11 because she’s the only one who’s taken time to talk to her. Even if Paisley isn’t the most talented football player, she is glad she gets the opportunity to play for the Wolves and is excited to be a part of the team, even if being accepted by everyone is going to take a lot of work.
